We've all heard the "this is going to be on Your Permanent School Record" quips about how your classroom misbehavior was going to be logged forever and keep you from getting a job, haven't we? There may or may not be a "Permanent School Record" for our deportment (or lack thereof), but permanent school records are available and can furnish a wealth of detail about your ancestors for your family tree.
While researching a Cherokee family last year I became aware of the Oklahoma School Records which include the names and birthdates of a parent's children enrolled in school. What a lucky find for documenting an entire family!

This school census record was found at https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/index.php?curid=103697
Similar records are available for schools around the US and the world! Remember that FamilySearch is FREE to use, you just need to have an email address to open an account. If you Search their "Wiki" for "school records" over 9,000 resources are available. You can narrow down by country, state, etc.

Ancestry has over 200 record collections for "School Records" showing US and international resources. Check their "Card Catalog" in the lower right-hand corner of your home page. It also has several yearbook photos that are indexed, meaning that your ancestor's photo might come up as an available record during the normal course of searching. See if you can find your parents in High School! It's a hoot!
This is a page out of the Waco High School yearbook, "The Daisy Chain" for 1944, and that school is no longer in service. Note what great historical references can be learned about your ancestors' lives - WWII was clearly top of mind as the war plane theme carries throughout the yearbook. I found this page by Googling for "High School Yearbook Photos 1944 Texas." Here is a link to lots of yearbooks, and it doesn't cost you a cent to look here!
For all of you heading back to school as teachers or students, I wish you a fruitful and successful year, with only positive remarks recorded upon your Permanent School Records! If I can help with your brick wall, shoot me an email.
Regards,
Leslie Ryan
