Summer officially begins next Monday, Memorial Day 2025. "Decoration Day" was started out after the Civil War in the South when cemeteries were visited to honor the War dead.
It has certainly evolved in modern times to a three day weekend full of picnics, and car and appliance sales, which is not necessarily a bad thing. I'm headed to a birthday party cookout myself!

With your Ancestry membership you can look up your family's military records from around the world with www.Fold3.com In the past, they have had free access on Memorial Day, but no word yet. You CAN, however, do a free search anytime to get basic info, and then sign up for a free trial!
MyHeritage.com does have free military record viewing this weekend through May 28!
FamilySearch.org has had "Two Cemetery Web Tools" (since 2023) to help you find where your ancestor might be buried, and how to find them inside that cemetery. I urge you to be aware of your family's military service members, especially those who died for our democracy often, not just this weekend. Share this with your family members, especially the young ones! I admit I'm a big softie. The sights of thousands of graves of young people bring me to tears. And like my Dad, who served in WWII, Korea, and Viet Nam, I can't and won't watch war movies for fun.
Memorial Day 2025 is for honoring our war dead. Veterans Day is for thanking those who served. Thank a currently serving person every day if you can!
