Best Family Tree Websites

FamilyTree Magazine has published their annual listing of the best websites for 2026, and it is quite extensive at 101 entries! Let's take a look at some highlights, shall we?
No surprise in the "Best Big" sites, Ancestry, FindMyPast, MyHeritage (all subscription) and FamilySearch (free).
"Best Genealogy News and Advice" may have some sources you have not yet tried: National Genealogical Society ($85/yr), The Photo Detective, and RootsTech (by FamilySearch), one of my very favorite sites with EVERYTHING you ever wanted to know for free!
For those of us looking for military records besides Fold3 that are FREE, they suggest American Battle Monuments Commission (military cemeteries, federal memorials, 17 foreign countries), Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System (was operated by the National Parks Service, but funding for updating has been cut), and Nationwide Gravesite Locator.
There are also recommendations for Tech Tools sites, Genetic Genealogy sites, best sites for Europe, Africa, Australia, Canada, Caribbean, etc. If you've got some time this weekend, you might want to take a look at the FamilyTreeMagazine "Best Of" lists. I was able to access that page without signing in, so you should be able to as well!
