The experienced genealogists among you, dear friends, probably already know about the largest conclave, convention, and party that is RootsTech. But for those of you just starting out, you need to know about this FREE ONLINE EVENT for Genealogy Education coming next Spring.
RootsTech is hosted in Salt Lake City every year, and 2024 will be no exception. But since COVID, this also became an online event. Talk about a silver lining result from a horrible trouble! Next year's theme is "Your Story Is Worth Remembering • 29 February–2 March 2024."
There will be over 200 online events in over 26 LANGUAGES, including speakers, classes, and vendor presentations over three days, and the handouts and syllabi are available for download. There are classes all day every day starting at 8:00 a.m., and the virtual Vendor Exhibit Hall is open every day starting at 9:00 a.m. Mountain Time, where there are some fun online contests with prizes!
You don't have to worry about missing a class, because there are so many sessions are available on demand. Not ALL of the presentations are available for online viewing or downloading, but the vast majority of the presentations are. You will have a wonderful experience while learning new things, have the chance to make several great acquaintanceships like I have over the last couple of years in the online chats.
Here is a link to descriptions of some of the lessons coming including researching in Mexico, Iran, and all over Europe: https://rootstech-slc.familysearch.org/event/937e1fd3-643a-4e3f-9550-e698c82776ea/websitePage:30716a17-5b17-440c-a1c5-28984d5dcae3?RefId=Agenda
Plus, once you are registered, you will have access to all of the PAST online lessons! Register with your FREE FamilySearch.org membership ID and you're in.
2024's first announced keynote speaker is Lynne M. Jackson, the great-great-grand daughter of Dred Scott, of the famous 1857 US Supreme Court decision wherein they ruled any person of African ancestry could never have US citizenship. She will be discussing "enduring struggles, honoring legacies, and hope for the future."
You can choose to attend the RootsTech Convention in person, a three day pass is $99 and a one day pass is $69. While in town you could tour the giant and recently modernized FamilySearch Library housing all the mystical genealogical records that are not online yet. Their events calendar can be found at the FamilySearch website.
You can sign up for notifications about more upcoming events at the main site: https://www.familysearch.org/rootstech/home
I have to admit I was very skeptical when this first online convention was announced during COVID, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I got out of it, and still do since I can go back to the saved videos on the site whenever I like! I'm not getting any compensation for this article (or any other article I write), I just feel that this is such a great opportunity for genealogists of all experience levels, and I want you to save the dates, February 29 - March 2, in your calendars now!
The Season of Joy is upon us (and has been for several weeks in the stores!). I hope there are moments of joy in family gatherings and memories coming to you! Let me know if you'd like some help getting that family tree ready to show everybody!
Sincerely,
Leslie Ryan
