Family Mysteries and Halloween

Leslie Ryan

Happy Halloween! Happy Samhain! Here is a picture of my "ofrenda" or altar (as we have discussed previously)with pictures of loved ones I think of every day and am especially honoring on this occasion of the "thinning of the veil" between the spirit world and ours. I'll be adding some fresh flowers later!

a Day of the Dead altar with photos of deceased family members and pets

There are a lot of mysteries and things we don't understand in this life. I have so many in my family's story, I wish I could go back in time and ask some questions, don't you?

Did my great-grandfather ever share with Grandmother Ruth the mysteries surrounding his birth and adoption? Would she have understood if his childhood was so rotten that it affected his ability to be a good husband and father?

What was it like to be the daughter of a railroad engineer in Erie, PA? Did my grandmother Nellie ever meet her grandparents in Callicoon? Did she know they were pioneers in settling the area? Where did Grandfather Martin and his twin Eddie go in the 1920's? Did they really go to China?

What family mysteries would you try to solve if visited by a friendly family spirit on All Hallows' Eve or All Souls' Day? Who would you like to visit with the most?

Wishing you many happy memories to be shared through the upcoming holidays!

Yours truly,

Leslie Ryan
